I've been meaning to say something about this but I figure the day after the Stanley Cup Finals fits in perfectly. There has been a long tradition / superstition followed by NHL players that they will not touch the Stanley Cup unless they win it. You could see the joy in Dave Andreychuk's face when he lifted the Cup and kissed it. There is something special about the Cup which cannot be duplicated by any of the other major trophies.
You can see the polar opposite of this in the silly way the NBA trophy has been used during the playoffs. Various players acting like they were in The Bachelor, vying for the love of the trophy. Other commercials showed players kissing, hugging and generally making out with the trophy. Bleh.
It's really too bad last night's hockey game might be the last one in a long time. Ugh.
