Broken Bones

So I get a call from the wife yesterday telling me that the boy had fallen off of a bike and possibly broken his arm. It turns out that he cracked his elbow and will now be in a cast for 4 weeks.

Yeah, nothing like a two-year-old being in a cast. Fun times ahead.

Blogging Tools Innovation

Dave asks what people want in blogging tools. Lots of interesting comments and ideas. Though many are related to the server-side tools (MT, Blogger, etc), there's still some cool things to think about related to writing tools.

AllConsuming in RDF

Leigh has put together some XSL which will transform AllConsuming data into RDF so it can be included into a FOAF file. Very interesting!

LiveJournal FOAF

It looks like LiveJournal now supports FOAF and has automatically created files for all LJ users. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the users were asked whether or not they wanted the file to be automatically created.

Since the FOAF files can contain personal information and many of LJ's users are young, that doesn't seem like a good idea. Hopefully, users will be able to opt-out or at least tell which data is public.

[Update]In the comments, danbri has pointed out that the files are created from the HTML profile which has both public and private info. That makes me feel better.

Using FOAF for comments

Ken MacLeod is doing something interesting for his comments. He is requiring FOAF files from those who want to comment on his blog. I think this could be the start of some interesting reputation-type ideas. The FOAF files have to be signed and web-accessible.

A Little Update

I've been out of the office for the past couple of days, visiting our developers up in San Carlos. Because of that, I feel like lots has happened out in the world so here's my brief recap:

There's more out there but work beckons...

Bloody Sunday

I Tivo'd and watched Bloody Sunday last night. What an amazing movie! Obviously, the day itself is still horrific but the film perfectly showed the emotion and horror of all involved.

RSS, Atom and Disney

Ross and Cory have posted their notes about how Disney has used RSS internally. Some very interesting things in here but unfortunately, it seems most are just focusing on the possible move to Atom as the data format. Ugh. From everything said, that's the focus?

Dining Directory

My good friend, Kevin sent me a link to a great site with lots of links to various places to eat around my new office.

Awesome!! Burritos tomorrow!

Stranger in a Strange Land

I'm writing this entry in a client named Zempt and I've stared using an aggregator called RSS Bandit. I don't currently have a command-line to work with but luckily I have PuTTY to access the development box.

It's weird being on Windows. I think this is the first time I've used it for my job. Luckily, the servers are running Linux but the current desktops are Windows. Using things like Firefox and Thunderbird help a ton but it is still going to take some getting used to.

Hopefully, I can save enough to get a new Mac for home which will offset this.

Two Weeks

The ironic thing is that at 3:30 this afternoon I received a job offer from 5Square Systems whereas two weeks ago at 3:30, I was in the process of being let go by CollabNet.

I would be a fool if I didn't understand that being out of work for only two weeks in this economy is something of a miracle but I'll take it.

Arch and Subversion

The past few days I've seen a few blog postings about using Arch for source control. Steve Jenson and Ted Leung are both running personal Arch repositories.

It seems that Arch is gaining some momentum away from Subversion in terms of what will replace CVS. I'm not quite sure why other than the fact that SVN seems to be more difficult to install and some of the clients aren't ready for primetime.

It will be interesting to see how the next months play out.

Writing software is like driving a bus

As I continue with my job search (and yes, a post giving more details will be coming shortly), I've tried to write code just to pass the time. Unfortunately, I've been finding that difficult to sustain. Perhaps, it is because I'm still coming to grips with losing my job, especially one I've had for over three years. N. Alex's post, however, has helped my thinking a bit.

Sometimes just the act of sitting down and writing is enough. Your mind and fingers just need to find the keys of put something down in your editor. Even if you look at the code later in the day and laugh at it, you will still be further along in your journey then if you hadn't done anything at all. At least, that's how I'm going to view it.

Raising the Ante

Janet and Justin had a bit too much fun at the end of the halftime show. It seemed to be intentional but it's funny to read all of the excuses being given. The best so far is Justin Timberlake's statement speaking of a wardrobe malfunction. I don't think I've ever heard of that before.

In case you missed it, Vividblurry has some video stills.
