Child Locks

I drove a couple of co-workers to lunch today and one had to sit in the back with the car seats. I forgot he couldn't get out from inside since we have the child locks. The two of us in the front seat were almost to the door before we realized we were missing one.

Morning Commute

Here's the commute for folks in New York. Some great pictures which make me miss Chicago and Boston. Trying to do a photoessay of my commute would be kind of difficult since I would be shifting gears and trying to take pictures at the same time. Probably not the smartest thing in the world to do.

Cubs vs. Cards

It's time again to head to St. Louis and go against the division-leading Cardinals. The Cubs are two back and this series starts a tough couple of weeks. First the Cards, then on to the South Side to face the White Sox. Back to Wrigley for Houston and finally the Sox again. If they can come out of this as close to first as they are now, it could easily propel them to even better things after the All-Star break.

Alex has posted the pitching match-ups. Too bad the first two games are on FSN instead of WGN since now I'll just have to live with the audio feed.

A good start

On the way to work this morning, I counted three Yankees hats along the side of the 101. I can only hope that some wannabe New York hipsters threw them out of their cars in disgust after seeing the Dodgers take two out of three.

Coming soon

No, I'm not dead but it does seem that way sometimes. The Crab Shack has been working me crazy hours so that's my excuse. But coming later today hopefully, some thoughts on remembering when the Juice was loose, a certain teams 6-game winning streak and who knows what else..

Trophies

I've been meaning to say something about this but I figure the day after the Stanley Cup Finals fits in perfectly. There has been a long tradition / superstition followed by NHL players that they will not touch the Stanley Cup unless they win it. You could see the joy in Dave Andreychuk's face when he lifted the Cup and kissed it. There is something special about the Cup which cannot be duplicated by any of the other major trophies.

You can see the polar opposite of this in the silly way the NBA trophy has been used during the playoffs. Various players acting like they were in The Bachelor, vying for the love of the trophy. Other commercials showed players kissing, hugging and generally making out with the trophy. Bleh.

It's really too bad last night's hockey game might be the last one in a long time. Ugh.

The Can Fought Back

Even though it is obvious that in order to be a writer, you need to actually write, I sometimes forget it. I don't need to read any more books about writing like On Writing and Bird by Bird. No, I just have to sit somewhere, open up the iBook and start typing. But of course, easier said than done.

What if I don't feel like typing? I do that every day at work so perhaps I should write longhand instead. It has been good enough for writers throughout the ages so why should I be any different? Then again, just typing into the iBook would be more practical sometimes. Ok, we'll leave that decision for another time and just do whichever is easiest at the moment.

What about my time? Well, I do get up at 5:45 each morning so I can get on the road, drive my miles and hopefully miss traffic. Since I generally get home when the Princess and Gonzo are about to either go to sleep or settle down, I can't write then because I would much rather read them stories so I feel like I have some relationship with them other than the weekends. The perfect time should be late at night since I'm such a night owl. Unfortunately, I think the driving has taken its toll on me there. I can still stay up until the wee hours of the morning but now I have to get up and drive instead of just rolling out of bed and working. In fact, last night, I fell asleep in my office chair. I didn't even think I was that tired but there I awoke at 4:30 this morning.

I've been thinking about getting up at 5 and writing until 5:45. That seems to be a solution and I remember reading someone saying that the nice thing about writing in the morning is that no matter how bad the rest of your day turns out, you still wrote. I like that.

What do I write? That can be a tough one for me. It's not that I haven't thought of ideas, whether fiction or non-fiction, but lately it seems that I don't think through the ideas and instead just start going after it. Invariably, the idea gets lost in the words, I get frustrated and the writing stops. I don't think I need to outline every detail but I do think I should at least get a vague idea of where things are going, if only, to give myself sometime to shoot for.

I'm sure I could ask myself many more questions but these seem to be the big ones in my head. Hopefully I've answered myself enough to get me back to writing, including this blog.
